HOMELESS STUDENTS
If you are homeless and
going to school, let the school know about it.
Being homeless and going to school would be hard for any child
regardless of age or grade level. Many
things that you normally would not have worried about before become issues,
such as transportation, space to do homework and school attendance. Some families are afraid to let their
child’s school know that they are in between places for fear of being judged
or, even worse, being reported to DFS.
There are some things
you should know about being homeless and going to public school:
·
There are laws that protect your child’s rights and your rights as
a parent to be treated as any other participant of the Adair County R-II School.
·
The school district has a program to help homeless families with
resources to help your child stay on track and can direct you to agencies that
can help you during your period of homelessness.
·
It is your choice to let the school district know that you are
homeless.
·
The school district, like any other agency that mandates reports,
must have a reason to call DFS.
Homelessness, depending on the circumstances, is not grounds to make a
DFS report.
Homeless students have
the right to:
·
Be enrolled without a birth certificate, immunization record or
other required documentation.
·
Attend the school that he/she attended before the family lost its
home.
·
Be transferred to a school closer to where he/she is staying now.
·
Get assistance with free transportation to and from school.
·
Have access to materials such as books and supplies to ensure an
equal opportunity to participate in school.
·
Receive any special services that he/she might need. These services include:
1. Special education
2. Bilingual services
3. Gifted and talented education services
4. Free lunch and breakfast program
5. Counseling services
6. Before and after school programs
7. Tutoring services
·
Attend school free of judgment.
Parents and guardians of
homeless children have the right to:
·
Be involved in your child’s education.
·
Be notified of and involved in any decision that your child’s
school makes regarding his or her social or academic career.
·
Request a Student Alert team meeting for your child and include
people of support. These may be a social worker or counselor from an agency you
are working with or someone that has tutored your child at an after school
program.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
WELCOME BACK!!!!
The new year has
started and we are setting our sights on the future! We have been working hard this summer to get our classrooms,
buildings, and school ready for the 2012-2013 school year. This is going to be an EXCITING year!
As with
anything, change happens. Not good or bad,
just different. We wished some
important members of the Brashear School Community “good bye and
congratulations” on their retirement. Jackie Church, Teri Crandall, Linda
Moore, George Moots, and Betty Stephens all retired at the end of last
year. They were all tremendous assets
to our school and they will be missed, but we wish them the best during their
retirement. Amy Feeney, Rhonda Fisher,
Fran Lambert, and Heath Schneider all chose to resign from Brashear to take on
different adventures, and we wish them only the best in all of their
careers. We welcome new faces during
this school year: Justine Bane,
Kindergarten; Willard Colegrove, Maintenance; Candace Hettinger, High School
Secretary; Michelle Noble, Paraprofessional; Emy Nutt, 3rd Grade; and Kyle
Robuck, K-12 PE. Becky Thomas will
serve as our Title I Reading teacher.
Change always happens!
Another BIG
change this year is in our food service program. Change always happens, sometimes because of mandates and
regulations. With the Healthy Hunger-Free
Kids Act of 2010, as a National School Lunch Program we were required to make
changes to our program, as did many other school districts. As a result, all of our lunches must meet
guidelines as directed by these programs.
Some examples of changes implemented are: each lunch served must contain 1 fruit, 1 vegetable (per week
must contain a dark green, red/orange, beans/peas, and starch), 1 cup of milk,
1 grain, and 1 meat/meat alternate.
Calorie intake must be considered.
Students are separated by grade to determine calorie intake; K-5 range
between 550-650 calories, 6-8 range between 600-700 calories, and 9-12 between
750 and 850 calories. As part of the
National School Lunch Program, we were also required to increase our lunch
prices, as were many districts within the state. We are anticipating a required increase for next school year as
well. Even with all of the changes to
our program, our wonderful food service staff is working hard to provide not
only a healthy lunch that meets the required standards, but also a good
tasting, hearty and filling lunch. The
mandated changes for the Breakfast program will take affect with the 2013-2014
school year. If you have any questions,
please feel free to call (660.323.5272) to talk or set up a conference.
Some other
changes are also happening here at BES/BHS.
We have started a new program during our “Tiger Time” with our 7th –
12th grade students. Each student is
assigned a house. Each house contains
15 to 17 students (at least 2 students from each grade), and each house has 2
faculty advisors. During “Tiger Time”
students will still be able to work on homework, but there will also be team
building exercises, house competitions, and activities also scheduled. One goal of our program is to strengthen
self-worth for all students by giving them a support group of students they can
“belong” to and go to for help. We will
also be working towards building school spirit and school pride during “Tiger
Time”. Faculty advisors will be
actively involved with their “houses” and also provide support for all students
in their “house”. We are excited to get
this program up and going and we are looking forward to positive outcomes.
Within the past
week, we received confirmation from DESE that our district has once again met
all 14 out of 14 MSIP standards. This
is our 8th year in a row!
Congratulations to our students, faculty and staff, parents, and patrons
of our district. An accomplishment like
this takes a group effort and support from the whole school community. So, CONGRATULATIONS…and THANK YOU!!!
It truly does take a village to build a
child and the Brashear Community is a GREAT village!

U.S. CELLULAR’S CALLING ALL COMMUNITIES
U.S.
Cellular is once again offering students a chance to win $150,000 for their
school and whatever project they feel their school needs. The Calling All Communities campaign is returning
September 14th - October 21st for its fourth year. Voters must visit their local U.S. Cellular store during the
voting period to pick up a voting code, and then enter in all requested
information online at www.uscellular.com to place one vote for the
school of their choice. New to the
campaign this year will be an interactive microsite housed on their website
that enables voters not only to place a vote, but make suggestions on how prize
money could be used and encourage other school community members to participate
in the campaign. To participate,
voters must be 18 years of age or older at time of entry. The school receiving the most community
votes will receive $150,000 and the next 17 schools with the most votes will
each receive $50,000 to use any way they choose.
For
more information about U.S. Cellular and past Calling All Communities
campaigns, visit uscellular.com or Facebook.com/uscellular.
