ADAIR COUNTY R-II NEWSLETTER
SEPTEMBER 1, 2014
Brashear, Missouri
LEARN, LAUGH, LOVE and LEAVE A LEGACY!
Welcome back!!!! The
2014-15 school year is off to an OUTSTANDING start! It is so exciting to welcome the kids back on that first
day! Lots of smiling faces, hugs, and
happy kids and teachers! Really, no one
gets over the excitement of the first day of school…no matter their age!
This summer has been one filled with many changes…in people and
also our facility. We would like to
welcome to our district Ms. Rachel Hunt.
She will be our new 3rd grade teacher taking over for Ms. Nutt, who took
a position at Hannibal Schools. Mr.
Heath Schneider is a welcome addition returning to our district. Mr. Schneider will be teaching 7th/8th grade
English and will serve as our K-12 Librarian.
Mrs. Tammy Wolter is taking over as our 5th grade teacher. Ms. Jessie O’Dell will be our new K-12
Instrumental and Vocal Music Teacher as well as continue as our Spanish
teacher.
If you haven’t had the chance to drive by or come to the school,
please do so! I think you will be
surprised and pleased! Our maintenance
staff and support staff worked long and hard this summer waxing, cleaning,
painting, mowing, and improving our building and grounds. Thanks to all who helped! And, then once you enter the high school,
you will be blown away by our gym!! Be
sure and come by…it looks great!!!!
One additional item I want to point out is our new buzz in system
at the main entrance. The education and
safety of your children are the top priorities of the Board of Education,
Administration, and staff. With that in
mind, the Board approved the purchase and installation of a new security
system. All doors will be locked by
8:30 a.m. each day. This is our 2nd
year of not having an elementary secretary.
As some of you may remember, Karla Hettinger retired and is only here
during the lunch hours working in the lunch room. So after 8:30 a.m., all visitors, parents, and patrons must enter
through the main entrance utilizing our buzz in system. Everyone will have to use the buzzer and
then be allowed in after being recognized by a school official. All visitors, parents, and patrons must
report to the high school office and get a visitor’s pass. I understand that this may seem unnecessary,
but if we can prevent 1 incident, 1 time of someone’s child being hurt, then it
is worth the extra time.
And now for the even more EXCITING news! Once again our students and staff have scored outstanding on our
state assessments. On our most recent
APR our district scored 131/140 pts.
for a 93.6%!!!! That is
TERRIFIC!!!! Thanks to our students,
staff, and to you the parents for working together to make Adair County R-II a
success! Now, we all understand, as
with anything, there are areas that we can improve on and keep striving for
improvement in other areas. Every year
is different. Students are taking
different classes with different teachers and different tests. We want to celebrate our successes but also
keep our mind set on our goal of always improving and learning.
I want to take this time to say thank you to you the parents,
grandparents, guardians, and friends for all of your support of your
child/children! Together we can achieve
more! Education is so important and
with a good strong education, this year will be SPECTACULAR! If there is ever anything I can help you
with or answer any questions, please do not hesitate to call, email, or stop by
my office.

HOMELESS STUDENTS
If you are homeless and
going to school, let the school know about it.
Being homeless and going to school would be hard for any child
regardless of age or grade level. Many
things that you normally would not have worried about before become issues,
such as transportation, space to do homework and school attendance. Some families are afraid to let their
child’s school know that they are in between places for fear of being judged
or, even worse, being reported to DFS.
There are some things
you should know about being homeless and going to public school:
·
There are laws that protect your child’s rights and your rights as
a parent to be treated as any other participant of the Adair County R-II
School.
·
The school district has a program to help homeless families with
resources to help your child stay on track and can direct you to agencies that can
help you during your period of homelessness.
·
It is your choice to let the school district know that you are
homeless.
·
The school district, like any other agency that mandates reports,
must have a reason to call DFS.
Homelessness, depending on the circumstances, is not grounds to make a
DFS report.
Homeless students have
the right to:
·
Be enrolled without a birth certificate, immunization record or
other required documentation.
·
Attend the school that he/she attended before the family lost its
home.
·
Be transferred to a school closer to where he/she is staying now.
·
Get assistance with free transportation to and from school.
·
Have access to materials such as books and supplies to ensure an
equal opportunity to participate in school.
·
Receive any special services that he/she might need. These services include:
1. Special education
2. Bilingual services
3. Gifted and talented education services
4. Free lunch and breakfast program
5. Counseling services
6. Before and after school programs
7. Tutoring services
·
Attend school free of judgment.
Parents and guardians of
homeless children have the right to:
·
Be involved in your child’s education.
·
Be notified of and involved in any decision that your child’s
school makes regarding his or her social or academic career.
·
Request a Student Alert team meeting for your child and include
people of support. These may be a social worker or counselor from an agency you
are working with or someone that has tutored your child at an after school
program.

The district
must ensure that students and/or their guardians are informed about asbestos
inspections, reinspections, surveillance, response actions and post-response
action activities at least once a year.

Asbestos Reinspection will be available in the district office for public
viewing during business hours.
BUSY BEES NEWS
Busy Bees met
for the first time on Wednesday,
August 20. Busy Bees is a
preschool program for children in our district ages 3-5 years old. Busy Bees will meet this year on Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 8:15-11:15
a.m. in the Parents as Teachers (PAT) classroom.
If you would
like more information about our preschool program, please call Mrs. Chelsea Coe
at 323-5272 ext. 33 or e-mail chelsea_coe@brashear.k12.mo.us.
A+ PROGRAM
Students in
grades 9-12 that have not signed an agreement for the A+ Schools Program are
encouraged to do so as soon as possible.
The student will need to see Mrs. Reeves in the Learning Center for an
agreement which needs to be signed by the student and their parent(s). A brochure explaining the guidelines of the
program will be given to the student with the agreement. Please feel free to call or email me with
any questions you might have at cheryl_reeves@brashear.k12.mo.us or
660.323.5272 ext. 15.

PUBLIC NOTICE
All responsible
public agencies are required to locate, evaluate, and identify children with
disabilities who are under the jurisdiction of the agency, regardless of the
severity of the disability, including children attending private schools,
children who live outside the district but are attending a private school
within the district, highly mobile children, such as migrant and homeless
children, and children who are wards of the state, and children who are
suspected of having a disability and in need of special education even though
they are advancing from grade to grade.
The Adair County R-II School District assures that it will provide a
free, appropriate public education (FAPE) to all eligible children with
disabilities between the ages of 3 and 21 under its jurisdiction. Disabilities include autism, deaf/blindness,
emotional disorders, hearing impairment and deafness, mental
retardation/intellectual disability, multiple disabilities, orthopedic
impairment, other health impairments, specific learning disabilities, speech or
language impairment, traumatic brain injury, visual impairment/blindness and
young child with a developmental delay.
The Adair County
R-II School District assures that it will provide information and referral
services necessary to assist the State in the implementation of early
intervention services for infants and toddlers eligible for the Missouri First
Steps program.
The Adair County
R-II School District assures that personally identifiable information
collected, used, or maintained by the agency for the purposes of
identification, evaluation, placement or provision of FAPE of children with
disabilities may be inspected and/or reviewed by their parents/guardians. Parents/guardians may request amendment to
the educational record if the parent/guardian believes the record is
inaccurate, misleading, or violates the privacy or other rights of their child. Parents have the right to file complaints
with the U.S. Department of Education or the Missouri Department of Elementary
and Secondary Education concerning alleged failures by the district to meet the
requirements of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
The Adair County
R-II School District has developed a Local Compliance Plan for the
implementation of State Regulations for the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act (IDEA). This plan
contains the agency’s policies and procedures regarding storage, disclosure to
third parties, retention and destruction of personally identifiable information
and the agency’s assurances that services are provided in compliance with the
General Education Provision Act (GEPA).
This plan may be reviewed during regular school hours on days school is
in session in the Office of the Superintendent of Schools.
This notice will
be provided in native languages as appropriate.
